Day Four

Day 4: The Peak, the Pain, and the Scramble

If you looked at my morning stats, today should have been a disaster. I woke up utterly exhausted, dealing with a massive, throbbing headache that made it painful just to turn my neck. To top it off? My period arrived early and I wasn’t prepared. I asked the guides if they have any feminine products and they asked me if toilet paper would work. No. Thankfully they asked other guides at a different camp, and another female trekker had some with her. Thank goodness.

But somehow, against all odds, this became my favorite day of the entire trek.

Why? Because today we got to scramble. There is nothing like using your hands and feet, finding holds on the rock, and actually climbing the mountain to make you forget about a headache. It was pure fun, only lasted for 10 seconds and it completely shifted my energy. I was also deeply inspired by Rose—watching her embracing the scramble at 72 years old was nothing short of incredible. She said that she does a lot of yoga, and it helps her to find the balance.

Feeling a second wind, I ended up hiking a large portion of the technical ups and downs by myself, locking into a great rhythm and rolling into camp a bit early. And of course, because the vibes were so high despite the rough start, jumping photos were absolutely mandatory.

Today is the best place for a photo with the mountain in the background. Don’t miss it!
