Day 6 | Lemosho Route
Summit day! With sleepy eyes, i dressed 6 layers on the bottom and 8 layers on top. Weather forecasts showed a felt temp of -10 celcius (15F).
In addition to Leon and Mody, three additional staff came with us: Daniel, Chaz and Jackson. The final summit trek is here, yet every step felt so hard. Following the little light from our headlamps, we walked in silence focusing on our breathing. All I could see were the feet Infront of me moving, and the rows of moving headlamps from ahead.
Daniel broke the silence and started to sing, and in unity the rest of the team joined in. The songs are in Swahili, and they were so beautiful and powerful.
It goes like this:
Jambo! Jambo bwana!
Habari gani? Mzuri sana!
Wageni, mwakaribishwa!
Kilimanjaro? Hakuna matata!
Thanks to Mody who stayed with me, I had the courage and motivation to keep going. I remember sipping on the most delicious bottle of coke. Every step felt impossibly hard. It was very much a mind vs. body. A lot went through my head as I battled against the little oxygen available in the air. This is the highest altitude I've ever been to yet.
I was sooo focused on the climb that I took 0 photos today. Can you believe it 😜
