The Peaks of the Balkens

Conquering the Peaks of the Balkans: A 5-Stage Ultralight Trekking Guide

The world’s newest transnational hiking experience is the Peaks of the Balkans Trail. Winding through the remote, unspoiled mountainous regions of Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro, this 120-mile signposted trail cuts through the dramatic southern end of the Dinaric Alps. It is the first major long-distance trail to traverse the Western Balkans, utilizing ancient tracks to connect deeply isolated, stunning alpine regions.

While the full trail consists of 10 stages typically completed over 10 days, I tackled Stages 1 through 5 at the end of July.

If you are looking for rugged peaks, rich culture, and a trail less traveled, here is exactly how I pulled off this incredible 5-day section hike.

🗺️ The Itinerary: Pristina to Tirana

  • Day 1: Fly into Pristina, Kosovo.

  • Day 2 (Stage 1): 2-hour drive from Pristina to the trailhead. Hike: Hotel Rugova Camp to Milishevc, Kosovo (6.7 miles // +4,700 ft).

  • Day 3 (Stage 2):Hike: Milishevc (Kosovo) to Doberdol (Albania) (13 miles // +4,700 ft).

  • Day 4 (Stage 3):Hike: Doberdol (Albania) to Cerem (Albania) (11 miles // +1,800 ft).

  • Day 5 (Stage 4):Hike: Cerem (Albania) to Valbone (Albania) (14.6 miles // +6,000 ft).

  • Day 6 (Stage 5):Hike: Valbone (Albania) to Theth (Albania) (11.5 miles // +3,000 ft).

    • Logistics: Grabbed a shared taxi bus with other hikers from the Theth trailhead back to Shkoder.

  • Day 7: Took the local bus from Shkoder to Tirana. Spent the day exploring Albania's vibrant capital.

  • Day 8: Fly out of Tirana, Albania.

💰 Trip Budget & Cost Breakdown

🎒 Packing List: 12 lbs Base Weight

Because you are staying in local guesthouses that provide hearty meals, you can leave the tent, sleeping pad, and stove at home. My base pack weight was a nimble 12 lbs (without water). Here is everything that made the cut:

Apparel & Layers

  • 1 pair thin, lightweight long pants

  • 1 pair hiking shorts

  • 1 sun shirt (essential for those exposed ridgelines)

  • 1 long sleeve shirt

  • 1 tank top

  • 1 windbreaker jacket

  • 2 sports bras

  • 3 pairs hiking socks

  • 3 pairs underwear

  • Buff, sun hat, and sunglasses

Gear & Electronics

  • Water filter

  • Headlamp

  • Anker battery pack

  • AirPods

Toiletries & Extras

  • Sunscreen & toothbrush

  • Earplugs (a must-have for shared dorm rooms!)

  • Camp sandals (for letting your feet breathe at the lodges)

  • A handful of trail snacks

  • Passport, Euros, & good vibes ✨

💭 The Verdict

Stages 1–5 offer an incredible mix of demanding climbs (that 6,000 ft day from Cerem to Valbone is no joke!) and unmatched hospitality in the traditional Albanian guesthouses.
